Welcome back to Thailand!

Landed at midnight in Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and took a taxi into the city of Bangkok. My good friend Lorenz from Switzerland was already there and ready for a beer. Did not see this guy for 3 months, so we had a reason to cheer a glass (or two or three) together. The next day we left before midday to Bangkok Don Muaeng Airport. Our next destination is Koh Samui. Due the monopolism on Koh Samui’s Airport trough Bangkok Airways (with mafiosi-prices like on many places in Thailand through the tuk-tuk mafia) we decided to book the Air Asia Island Transfer from Bangkok Don Muaeng to Koh Samui. The price for Air Asia’s Island Transfer was about a third of the price compared to a Bangkok Airways ticket to Koh Samui. Included in the Air Asia Island Transfer Package was the flight to Surat Thani, transfer by bus to Donsak Pier and the ferry to Lipa Noi Pier in Samui. It’s a very easy way to save money if you have time and if you are travelling on a budget.

Everything went fine and finally we arrived in Koh Samui in the evening. From Lipa Noi Pier to the different beaches like Chaweng on Samui it was possible to book a minivan during the bus transfer to Donsak Pier (at a reasonable price about 200THB). So no worries about transportation after arrival on Samui, but make sure that you are staying in a good location, the tuk-tuk and taxi-mafia is also working in Samui like in Phuket and they will charge you with moonprices even for a short ride. Don’t support them. Example: a short ride within Chaweng beach is already 200 THB, a ride to the airport from Chaweng cost ridiculousely 300 THB. For another example to compare taxi prices in Thailand: a taxi from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport to the city center like Sukhumvit costs about 220 THB (about 35km!, calculated without toll fees).

We spent 2 nights on Koh Samui before we were heading to Koh Phangan on December 4th for the Full Moon Party (FMP) on December 6th. In Koh Samui you find during the high season almost every night beach parties at the Ark Bar on Chaweng Beach (free entry). Especially after midnigt, this place gets very crowded.

I booked the ferry ticket (without any other transfers) online and a little bit in advance (about 7 days) and got a discount of about 35%. Please make sure that you book your ferry ticket early enough if you want to attend the full moon party! If you are staying at Chaweng Beach chose the Bangrak Pier for your departure because this one is closer and cheaper to reach.

There are also plenty offers to find in all the travel agencies on Koh Samui to get to Koh Phangan. Some people decided to go to Koh Phangan in the evening and leaving the party the next morning around 7am. What a hassle, but a good opportunity to save some bucks because many hotels and hostels are applying a 5- or 7-day policy for a minimum stay and the price for the fullmoon night is normally a rip off. We stayed 5 nights in the funny Moonstone Playboy Hostel at the Haad Rin beach (the beach where the FMP is celebrated). From the Pier in Koh Phangan just take a minivan for 100 THB to go to Had Rin. One important thing about Koh Phangan and especially Koh Tao as well: DO NOT HIRE A SCOOTER! There is a lot of scam! If you really want take many pictures from the scooter even under the scooter – good luck! My room mate got charged with a fee about 5’500 THB.

The time in Koh Phangan passed quickly. Already after 2 nights we celebrated the FMP (this night, Koh Phangan was packed with people and so many arrived this evening for just this crazy night). Unfortunately or for the safety of a possibly loss, I left my camera at home. So I don’t have any pics from that night but will post a video from youtube about the famous party here.

3 days after the FMP we took a ferry to Koh Tao. The ferry was crowded and delayed like our first ferry from Samui to Phangan. Note: If you are having a connecting flight after a ferry transfer, calculate enough time between arrival of the ferry and departure of your flight! Good luck again ;)

In Koh Tao we stayed at the famous Sairee Beach. Make sure you booked your accomodation early if you wanna stay there after FMP. It’s always crowded and the cheap places are fully booked. We spent our days at the pool and beach and one day we did the trip to Koh Nangyuan. It’s about a 10-15min boat trip from Sairee Beach to get there and a boat taxi coast only 300THB (return). Just book this trip straight at the beach and not with a travel agency if you wanna save some money.

After Koh Tao we travelled back by ferry to Koh Samui and my friend Lorenz continued his trip to Sydney and I by bus and ferry to Krabi Ao Nang. The land- and seatransfer from Koh Samui Chaweng  to Krabi Ao Nang was only 600 THB compared to almost 4’000 THB with Bangkok Airways and the taxi to get there and minivan to Krabi Ao Nang. But on the other hand, it was almost an 10-11 hour long journey.

Stayed in Krabi Ao Nang in the Slumber Party Hostel. The location is not that good if you wanna go to the beach but there are many restaurants nearby and it’s a funny party place.

One day I decided to hire a scooter and exploring Krabi and driving to the Tiger Cave. The scenery to get there was quite nice with all the rocks and mountains.

Before it was getting dark I went on my way back to Krabi Aong. Unfortunately around 15km before Krabi Aong, I noticed a deep hole in the street too late and crashed down with my bike on my arm and shoulder. Fortunately the car driver behind me could stop in time and helped me up. Back in Krabi Ao Nang I went to a clinic to get an X-Ray. The doctor told me it looks like a fractur and this will take about 2 months to heal and that I have to go asap to Phuket for a better treatment. Oh my Buddha, what kind of bad news! :-(

The first thing I had to get done after the doctors visit was returning my scooter, because they were still keeping my passport as a deposit. I already was thinking, this will be an expensive “pleasure”, returning the scooter. I hired the scooter through a recommendation at the Chatchada Guesthouse. When the scooter owner arrived and watched at my bandages he just felt sorry with me and told me that I only have to pay the damaged mirror for about 500THB. So kind of him. Thank you very much. Next, I had to call my insurance if they will cover a possibly stay in that hospital in Phuket. They had to do some clarifications first and called me back, that they will send a confirmation letter to the hospital. Further I had to organise a taxi which will transport me at night to Phuket (almost 200Km away from Krabi Ao Nang). The owner of the Chatchada Guesthouse (Mama Chatchada), supported me a lot and on this place I would like to say  thank you again for everything Mama Chatchada!

The taxi picked me up at 23:00 and we arrived finally at 01:00 at night at the Bangkok International Hospital in Phuket. Unfortunately the hospital did not receive any confirmation so I had to pay first a deposit about 20’000 THB. Like my friend Simon from Phuket told me before “This hospital is a money monster”. Yes it is, they drove me by wheelchair to the ATM’s (5 different ATM’s were at the same place). After X-Ray and some checks they told me that no surgeon was available at night and that I had to wait until tomorrow. Tired and exhausted I checked in to my hospital room at around 03:00 at night  (room price: 10’000 THB a night!, my most expensive accommodation so far during my trip) .

The following day I still had the problem with my insurance (Axa Winterhur) that they did not sent the confirmation/guarantee for my treatment. So I had to call them again and again a couple of times until the hospital received the guarantee about 20’000 USD in the afternoon for the operation and treatment. Stayed there altogether 4 nights and 4.5 days. During my stay my good friend Simon and his wife Tan came over to Phuket town for a visit and also my friend Run Lanla. Thank you guys! Staying far away from home but nevertheless got some visitors :)

On the day of leaving it took hours until the doctor arrived for a final check up. We finished everything around 14:00 in the afternoon. But then I did not hear anything to leave for a long time. After asking what is going on they told me: “Your insurance did not yet confirm the final payment about 10’000 USD”. So I called them again and again but for hours nothing happened, no sign that I could leave soon. Got another call from the internal insurance office from the hospital and they told me that I have to stay another night if they will not receive the confirmation until 21.30. Finally I could leave after 20:00. How annoying was this.

So my stay in Phuket was then unfortunately quite quiet and I had to rest a lot. My planned divings with my friend Simon I also had to skip because I could not even take a shower :( But we had some time to hit some bars after finishing my medicaments and found that one place which they were eating Swiss Cheese Fondue and invited us to join. Yummi, Yummi. How I miss this kind of Swiss Food :)

So that’s all about my trip in Thailand for the month of  December. Thanks for sorry and sorry for the delay. See you next time in Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur for new year and Penang!
