Today was the day to say goodbye to Tokyo and hello to Takayma. Right now was also the time to use my Japan Rail Pass (will write later an article about the Pass and transportation in Japan). This morning I left Asakusa in direction to Tokyo station by subway (1 stop at the interchance in Ginza). There I boarded the Shinikansen highspeed train “HIKARI” (with a topspeed up to 270 km/h WUUUUHUUU!)  to Nagoya (about 2h ) and changed to the HIDA Takayma limited express train to Takayama (about 2.5h). When you are travelling with a Japan Rail Pass you can reserve seats on the most trains in advance without any fees. So I had the benefit sitting twice at the window.

Takayama is a small city with a couple of shops, restaurants and bars. Unfortunately there is no a lot to do. Everything closes very early with exeption the 7-Eleven or Family Mart stores or yes also the Mc Donalds. My hostel was “the J-Hoppers Hostel Takayama” check here for the review.

The main attractions in Takayama are as example the Miyagawa Morning Market, old private houses (street), Sanmachi traditional buidlings preservation area, Shiroyama Park, shrines or the Takayama Museum of History and Art.

Overall I stayed just 2 nights in Takayama.

In Takayama I also had the possibility to taste the delicious Hida-Beef (probably it was not the most expensive one but it was great) :-)

The highlight, as you will see on the following pictures, was the half-day Shirakawa-go tour which my hostel imparted for 3500 YEN instead of 4000 as a normal price. The guide was a funny english/japanese speaking guy and got us the chance on the way there (about 50min from Takayama) to take some pics with the famous Sarubobo doll. The doll doesn’t has a real face and is mostly created by grandmothers for there grandchildren. If you receive a Sarubobo doll it should bring you luck and many babies – so i returned them again after the pic :-D

In Shirakawa-go the main attractions are the different houses as „Kanda House“, Wada-House“, “Nagase House“ or the Myozenji Temple and Doburoku Festival Museum.

Finally arrived,we got 2 hours time to spend in Shirakawa-go. First I climbed up straight to the observation point and enjoyed a great view about that small village which is also known as another Unesco world heritage village.
