It’s time to say goodbye to Hiroshima and hello to Kyoto! The train journey is just about 90 min by the Sakura Shinkansen (Hiroshima to Shin-Osaka) and 15 min by the Hikari Shinkansen (Shin-Osaka to Kyoto). The whole trip was covered by the Japan Rail Pass.

In Kyoto I stayed at the Khaosan Kyoto Guesthouse in a very convenient location. There I spent altogether 5 days/6 nights but did not visit as many attractions as planned before – after 2 weeks of every day doing day trips you are getting tired a little bit of visiting temples and shrines :-D

What I visited at the beginning was Nara (again one of the famous Unesco Heritages Sites). Nara is just about 45 min away from Kyoto and the whole trip is covered by the Japan Rail Pass if you use the JR-Line (JR line is one way 690 YEN). If you don’t have a RP, travel to Nara by Kinetsu Railways – it’s just a little bit cheaper (610 YEN one way) .  Nara itself is famous for it’s many hundreds of deers and also the museums and temples.

Another day I decided to do a short trip to Okayama and visiting Korakuen Garden. It’s famous as one of the 3 top gardens in Japan. The whole trip from Kyoto to Okayama was covered by the Japan Rail Pass (check that you can board a Hikari Shinkasen so you don’t need to change the train in Shin-Osaka. Normally you have one connection every hour). Arrived in Okayama board Bus Nr. 18 until bus stop “Koakuen-mae”. There are about 3 connections per hour. Price was about cheap but i cannot remember anymore the exact fare.

Another day I went to Arashiyama Area and visited the famous bamboo forest (no entrance fee) and also Kinaki Ji Temple (entrance fee 400 YEN) in Kinugasa Area.

Next visit was Kinkaku Temple. But how to get there from Arashiyama? Just board the train at “Randen station” in Arashiyama to Kitano Hakubaicho. There is one change necessary at “Katabira no Tsuji station”. Calculate about 20-25min for the whole trip. There was at flat fare for the entire line for 200 YEN (JP is not valid). From “Katabira no Tsuji station” it’s a 15min walk or take the bus to “kinkakuji-michi”. If you prefer travelling by bus in Kyoto there is also a “Kyoto one day bus pass” for 500 YEN available. If you don’t accept that offer, you pay for every bus ride a flate of 230 YEN.

Furthermore I have to show you a picture of the impressive Kyoto train station:

As a culinary highlight I decided visiting Kobe in the evening for tasting the famous Kobe Beef. I found a “cheap” restaurant which offered a set with different starters, side dishes and dessert at a reasonable price. I did not regret it, it was a great experience!

On my last day on my to do list was Fushimi Inari Shrine (no entrance fees). It was quite close to the hostel. About 10 min by “Keihan Line” from Gion Shijo station (when you are staying at the Khaosan Kyoto Guesthouse) to Fushimi Inari station.
