Air Asia flight-thru via Kuala Lumpur to Tokyo

Today was my first experience with the “Air Asia Fly-Thru” service. It’s a very simple service which is as follows: You can check your luggage from your 1st origin to your final destination even if you have another transfer destination between. Sounds boring and not like news for frequent flyer which are using famous airlines isn’t it?

Normal Air Asia standards are that if you book a flight from point A to point C with a stop/transfer at point B,  you need to collect all your bags and check them in again at Point B. Annoying isn’t it? But today Air Asia is offering more and more routes (at the moment when you are flying via Bangkok Don Mueang or Kuala Lumpur klia2 Airport). Great news for a traveller on a budget and using Air Asia! My flight was this time with an Airbus A320 from Bangkok Don Mueang via Kuala Lumpur klia2 (new low coast terminal since this year, 2014) to Tokyo Haneda with an Airbus A330-300. The layover time was only 1h 25min, but enough to change between the gates, security control and doing some shopping. The flight departed on time at 14:30 and landed 22:30 in Tokyo Haneda.  I and also my luggage arrived – so I have to say – the Air Asia fly-thru service was working well and it’s really convenient:)

I was the lucky one which got the chance to grab a seat at an Air Asia big sale at a very very low price so I did not expect a lot. The aircraft was an Airbus A330-300. No entertainment was provided (just very little for sale watching on a tablet), no power plugs, no free food or drinks (but you can buy at a very fair price).

    Hi Matthias,
    thanks for your detailed report.
Two things were completely new to me:

    1. There are obviously seats available now inside the LCC- Terminal at KL or did Air Asia just build a new terminal for themselves, because when i stayed there last year there was no seating at all in the public area?
    2. You’ve got a complimentary Snickers bar for your “5 star meal” onboard the Air Asia long distance flight which i haven’t got on my AA-flights. Or did you have to pay extra for it?? Be honest! :D

Have a nice time in Japan.

      Hey Kai
      1. I think they closed the old LCC-Terminal already and opened the new klia2 close from the old one. Some parts are still under construction but the airport looks quite good for a low cost one and yes there are seats for free :)
      2. In Air Asia is nothing for free – forget as a “complimentary service” :-D
      Cheeers, Matthias

    Hi Matthias,

Thank you for this share. Where did you sleep when you were in Haneda Airport? Was it before or after immigration checking in the arrival? I know that sometimes facilities in airside are much better than the landside (in Changi Airport Singapore for example).
    Thanks again.
    Best,
    Panji

    • Matthias says:

      Hi Panji
Sorry for my late reply. Slept after passing the immigration in Haneda close to the check in counters (landside). Place was safe and i left my luggage overnight at a storage.
      Safe travels! Cheers!
